MenACE project: National Seminar held in Portugal
Lisbon, 19th March, 2019
The national seminar of the MenACE project (Mental Health, Aging and Palliative Care in European Prisons) was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on the 19th of March 2019.
Forty-six participants attended the Seminar, including prison guards, healthcare staff from the Caxias Prison Hospital, and staff working at the psychiatric ward of Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison (attended through video-conferencing).
Francisco Navalho, Deputy Director-General of the Portuguese Prison and Probation Service, made the opening remarks. Then, Jorge Monteiro from the DGRSP presented the project, its objectives, main outputs, and impact at the national level. On behalf of IPS, Susana Reis presented the MenACE training package and its three components (e-learning, classroom-based and train the trainer course). Participants also discussed the piloting activities in the Portuguese context.
The Seminar has been hosted by the Portuguese Prison and Probation Service (DGRSP) and IPS.

MenACE presented at the ICPA annual international conference in Canada
Montreal, 25th October, 2018
The MenACE project was presented at the ICPA - International Corrections and Prisons Association - Annual Conference which took place between the 21th and 26th October 2018, in Montreal, Canada.
The presentation was made on the 25th October 2018 by Kathleen van de Vijver and Pedro das Neves, from the Belgium Prison Service and from IPS Innovative Prison Systems, respectively.
The communication was entitled “Mental Health, Ageing and Palliative Care: challenges and responses for Correctional Services”.
In this session, the speakers presented the progress and main developments of the MenACE Mental Health, Ageing and Palliative Care project. Developed by a consortium that includes the Correctional Services of Belgium, Romania and Portugal, the Helse Bergen HF Haukeland University Hospital from Norway, Hospice Casa Sperantiei (Romania), the BSAFE LAB of the UBI University, IPS Innovative Prison Systems, and EuroPris , this project aims to increase the response to mental health disorders within prisons and the quality of palliative and end of life care services provided, by enhancing the competences of management and frontline staff to address the prisoners’ mental health needs and the special needs of older prisoners.

MenACE project: fifth project meeting and final Conference held in Romania
Brasov, 18-19th October, 2018
MenACE – Mental Health, Ageing and Palliate Care in European Prisons: The fifth project meeting and final conference were hosted by Hospice Casa Sperantei in Brasov, Romania, on the 18th and 19th of October 2018.
On behalf of IPS, Pedro das Neves and Susana Reis presented the MenACE training package and its three components (e-learning, classroom-based and train the trainer course) at the National Conference on Palliative Care.
Furthermore, the project’s conference agenda included two presentations by the promoter partner, HOSPICE Casa Speranței, namely about the current EU practices in prison mental healthcare, geriatrics and palliative care services and also concerning the topic of communication with difficult patients and conflict management.
As regards the 5th (and final) project meeting, the consortium partners have discussed the Outputs’ implementation progress, budget issues, and activities planning for the remaining six months of the project.

MenACE project’s third and last training event held in Portugal
Lisbon, 25th - 29th June, 2018
The third and last MenACE project’s training event took place in Lisbon, from the 25th to the 29th of June 2018. The training was attended by a total of 34 practitioners from different penitentiary administrations, namely 15 from Portugal, 13 from Romania, and 6 from Belgium.The presented and discussed topics included geriatrics and palliative care in prisons, the Portuguese case, staff health and well-being in face of the challenges posed by a growing older prison population, the management and treatment of the mentally ill in forensic settings, self-harm, and suicide among inmates with mental health conditions, etc. In addition, this MenACE training event also provided participants with a visit to the palliative care unit and to the psychiatric ward of the São João de Deus Prison Hospital, in the region of Lisbon.
Second short-term staff training course of prison staff on mental health, aging and palliative care held in Romania
Bucharest, 23rd - 27th April, 2018
Professionals from Belgium, Romania, and Portugal gathered in Bucharest, between the 23rd and the 27th of April, 2018, to discuss and be trained on how to deal with mental illness, geriatrics, and palliative care in prisons. This is the second training course taking place within the framework of the MenACE project which aims at increasing the response to the mental health disorders that generally affect the prisons’ population; the response to the growth trend of ageing; and the quality of palliative and end of life care provided in prisons, by enhancing the competences of both management and frontline staff. The participants were medical staff, psychologists, social workers, criminologists, and also professionals in managerial positions.
MenACE project: first staff training event held in Belgium
Bruges, 26th February - 2nd March, 2018
This training was attended by sixteen participants from Portugal – BSAFE Lab (of UBI – Beira Interior University), IPS_Innovative Prison Systems, and DGRSP – Directorate General of Reintegration and Prison Services – Romania (Hospice Casa Sperantei), and Belgium (the Federal Public Service of Justice). The training has covered mental health, palliative care and aging in prisons, and the staff from different jurisdictions have seized this opportunity to share their experience and concerns.
MenACE project presented at international congress in Portugal

Pedro das Neves, CEO of IPS_Innovative Prison Systems, and Vitor Costa, of the BSAFE Lab (Beira Interior University), have presented the transnational project MenACE – Mental Health, Aging and Palliative Care in Prisons at the 8th International Congress of the Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Psychology of Justice.

MenACE National Seminar held in Romania

MenACE project partners, including representatives from the prison administrations of Romania, Belgium, Portugal, Norway, and Belgium, have met to discuss the current situation, needs, practices, and recommendations on how to address the issues related to mental illness, aging and palliative care among prisoners.
MenACE project: kick-off meeting in Romania
Bucharest, 6th February, 2017
The event that marked the launch of the MenACE project took place in Bucharest. This project aims to increase the response to the mental health issues that affect a significant portion of the prison population, as well as to increase the quality of palliative and end-of-life care services by enhancing the skills both of management and front-line staff to mental health needs as well as those resulting from the aging process of prisoners. MenACE is funded by the Eramus+ Programme - Strategic Partnerships for Adult Education.
